What a place. Koh Phanang is amazing. To think if we had not met Alice, Orla and Jo in Mui Ne there is a great chance that we would not have made it down for the full moon party, or the other festivities that are a part of a must do experience for anyone travelling in Thailand.
This part of the trip, for me, was exclusively about partying. There is something amazing about partying all night until sunrise with people that you hardly know but have quickly become good friends.
Where to start with the story – probably that it needs to be seen to be believed, literally thousands of people converging on the jungle, or Hadriin beach to dance the night away. A sea of body paint, with some fantastic designs, inspired from people’s imaginations. Enjoying buckets of cocktails while dancing and meeting new friends.
During the day we also did some activities as well – namely the slip and fly. Open during the full moon season every month they can turn on the party for those looking to unwind during the day. Scooters are so much easier on the quieter island of Koh Phanang, and they also unlock the ability to explore and get around without relying on standing off the back of the taxi!
The highlight for me was undoubtedly the full moon experience, a night spent partying that while I struggle to remember all of it, I will certainly never forget, waking up on the beach at sunrise as the party was starting to wind down is a beautiful memory that I will forever cherish. One of my philosophies when I travel is to live for the now and live impulsively. Arguably how I ended up here as well to be honest.
When I finally returned to the hostel I was met by a couple of people relaxing on the couch, spending 5 minutes before they went to the biggest after party on the island while many revelers were just putting their heads on the pillow for the first time. What a party it was, dancing the morning away – this was another highlight, meeting new people, sharing travel stories, everything that I love about travel was epitomised at Backyard Bar.
Sleeping most of the rest of the day I set off to explore the island by scooter late that afternoon, and eat something for the first time as I took in the rare beauty that is the sun setting over Thon Sala pier.
That night, I started quietly, but meeting some more amazing people downstairs at our hostel provided the shot of inspiration to seek out the after party. With our new friends we sough out Guys Bar – the hidden gem 5 minutes by boat, and home of the official after party – a much more chilled vibe but again what an opportunity to meet new people and to use an old cliché “dance like no one is watching”.
I also want to give a special shout out to Echo Beach Hostel – an amazing little gem situated metres from the beach, home to the coolest travelers, and amazing staff – especially the in the mornings – always being greeted with a friendly face made me feel as though it was home.
Another special shout out to my travel buddy – Peter, again someone I met at the airport, did not know before we left and throughout this trip, especially in Koh Phanang we have had a truly remarkable time.
Koh Phanang is absolutely amazing – this trip has been unbelievable and I am only in the first month. To date Koh Phanang has been my highlight. I have met some of the most amazing people, partied with the best of them, and lived on the edge. Taking the unlikeliest of chances, experiencing things I have never done with people I have never met.
This place is incredible and I can’t wait to come back.
